Muirfield, Alba / Scotland
Designed by Old Tom Morris, with later revisions by Harry Colt.
The course
Home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the oldest organised golf club in the world, Muirfield sits above the Firth of Forth in Gullane, East Lothian. Its two returning loops of nine, one clockwise and one counter, expose every hole to a shifting wind, and its deep revetted bunkers reward placement over power. It has hosted The Open sixteen times, most recently in 2013.
Signature hole: The par-5 9th runs along the boundary wall with out of bounds left and a cluster of bunkers guarding the approach, a hole that has decided more than one Open.
